Prue Acton biography

Prue Acton 1943-present






Prue Acton is a worldwide fashion icon. She was born on 1943 in Benalla, Victoria. Prue’s parents were both successfully business people. Prue is the first female Australian to mount a show of her own range of garment in New York Prue has designed over thirty different clothing lines and is known as the golden of fashion.

Prue was educated at fire bank Anglican girl’s grammar school in Melbourne. Prue loved painting and still does. Prue got in to art at the age of three. Now her former painting has become her full time job.

Prue began her studies in art at the young age of 15, at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. (RMIT).Between 1958-1962 she completed her diploma of art majoring in textiles at the RMIT. In this time a lot of Prue’s ideas came out. These clothing designs came in, in the 60s and 70s.

In 1963 Prue established her own fashion design business in flinders lane Melbourne. Prue was 21 in this time and over 350 designs came out a year. As well as selling an average of1000 dresses a week in 80 different outlets in Australia and New Zealand. Prue’s work is designed as powerful.

1958-1988 Prue has won all different fashion awards. In between this time she got awarded an OBE as she won the others too. Because of this Prue is described as Aussies young darling of dress design.

Prue also designed the Australian winter Olympic uniforms. Prue uses natural pigments for her art work. These pigments are soil from her property mixed with eggs from her own chickens to create tempera paint.

Prue Acton generously donated her business and design records to RMIT s Frances Burk textiles. She also gave her resource centre and sale material, logos, signs and resource awards, photographs and oral history interviews to the museum if Victoria to Prue Acton’s collection.

Prue Acton now lives in rural Victoria with Mervyn Moriarty. She is now enjoys her life painting.
